OFFICIALS at Somerset County Council have tried to allay fears by reassuring people that a change to the authority’s phone number will NOT mean a hike in charges.

The council has announced in its regular newsletter, Your Somerset, that later this year it will be introducing a single 03 number.

So instead of phoning one of ten 0845 numbers to contact the council, as at present, people will have a single number to call about any of the services.

The newsletter reads: “Better still, calls to 03 numbers cost no more than a national rate call to a 01 or 02 number.”

But the Weekly News has this week heard from a worried resident concerned the move to 03 would mean a hike in phone charges.

The county council has, however, been quick to stress that that is not the case. “Calls to 03 numbers from landlines and mobiles are included in free call packages, or where charged for, will cost no more to phone than to call a home or a business number,” said a County Hall spokesman.
