PLANS for more houses in Wedmore could bring the village’s crowded roads to a standstill.

That was the warning from residents who are angry permission for 55 more homes has been approved by Sedgemoor planners.

More than half will be sold on the open market while 24 have been earmarked as affordable homes.

Wedmore Parish Council says there has been a desperate need for the past ten years for more affordable homes in the village.

However a number of residents claim the scheme has not been properly thought through.

Mary West said she wrote to Sedgemoor District Council to object to the application.

“Before any consideration is given to this proposal it is vital that the appalling traffic conditions presently existing in and around the village are alleviated.

“Imagine adding another 55 cars or probably more to the traffic trying to wend their way through this maze.”

Alison Crooks also wrote to object to the increased traffic during contruction of the development.

She said: “It is not a suitable route to be used for additional traffic of any kind to enter the site and certainly not for construction traffic.”

Speaking about the parking problems that the new homes could create, Mrs Crooks added: “The plans will exacerbate the problems there are already for existing housing on the east side of the village.”

Cllr Richard Burden, ward member for Wedmore, said: “As a member of the parish council I strongly supported the affordable housing and the 55 was the way to get it.”

He said the council had held an information day to address traffic concerns.

“I think the parish was really pleased with the information afternoon,” he said.

“There were a good number of people in favour of it.

“Most of all it was a good way for the parish council to get the information out to the public.”
