BURNHAM welcomed a political heavyweight last week as Leader of the House of Commons and former Foreign Secretary William Hague came to town to back a campaign for ‘English votes on English laws’.

Mr Hague turned up to give his support to the fairer votes campaign, which is being run by Conservative prospective MP candidate for Burnham, James Heappey.

As patron of the ‘fair votes’ campaign, Mr Heappey was joined by William Hague to rally support and help gather signatures for a petition.

The former leader of the Conservative Party spoke to Burnham residents in a bid to get them behind the movement.

He has also drawn up many of the proposals for the ‘English Votes on English Laws’ plan.

Mr Heappey said: “I’m very grateful to William for joining us as I launch the ‘Fair Votes for All’ campaign in this constituency.

“It’s an important matter for residents here.

“Why should someone elected in Braemar continue to have a say on what happens here in Burnham when we will soon have no say on what goes on up there?

“The SNP have made no secret of their intention to throw their weight around in the next Parliament, especially if part of a coalition with Ed Miliband.

“People in Somerset need the security of knowing that Scottish MPs cannot hold us to ransom and that we all have a fair say.”
