EARLY spring sunshine attracted scores of visitors with Brean beach seeing more than 140 vehicles parked on the sands during the afternoon.

Beach warden Dave Furber said it was the “busiest day of the year so far”.

Meanwhile in town many businesses reported a customer boost and the team at the Burnham Information and Rescue Support (BIARS) were kept busy with an increased level of incoming queries at Burnham’s tourist information centre.

Prospects are looking particularly bright in Burnham high street as the Town Council’s makeover continues to give the heart of the town a good sprucing up.

Work is on schedule to be completed ready for the anticipated rush during the Easter bank holiday weekend.

The high street’s pavements have just been resurfaced with new paviers and work to install new lighting columns, sign posts, notice boards, cycle racks, hanging baskets, flower planters and event banner columns is also well on the way to being finished.

The Town Council’s project manager Paul Martin said: “It’s all coming together very nicely and looking really attractive.

“The section of pavement resurfacing is being done by the County Council and is close to being finished and it looks really good.

“The installation of the hanging basket columns and street lights is about half done and the company in charge of them has a few more to put up.

“Everything will be ready for the busy Easter weekend where lots of visitors will be coming here I’m sure.”

Ian Jeffries, Burnham’s tourism manager told the Weekly News that traders were hoping for an early boost on the back of good weather and the town’s improvements.

“Last Saturday was a perfect example of which we expect to see happening in the weeks to come, particularly over Easter.

“I know lots of traders who are seeing an increase in advanced bookings because this trend of people staying in the UK to go on holiday is on the rise.

“I think it’s going to be a good Easter period of the area, obviously it’s very dependent on the weather but as last weekend show, as soon as people see the sun come out they’re on the beach or in the town centre.

“It is fantastic that the town centre work will be complete in time for the Easter weekend.”
