A RESCUE dog from Burnham has beaten the odds and shown that every dog can have its day by helping her team place second at Crufts.

Daisy, a four-year-old Red Fox Labrador, was part of a team of six dogs representing the South-West who took home the silver medal in this year’s Inter-Regional event.

She was rescued in 2012 by Spencer Dibble and his partner Annette Gibson at just ten months old.

By that time Daisy had already known three owners before being fostered by the Burnham couple.

Spencer said: “When we first met her she was very quiet and nervous around people.

“She didn’t like to be left alone.

“We’d fostered a number of dogs before Daisy but ended up adopting her because she really needed a home.

“She has hip dysplasia which is probably why she was in need of a home as a pup.”

The genetic disorder which affects the hind legs of the dog will most likely be passed on to any offspring meaning that owners could not breed from Daisy.

Annette began taking the pup to The Woodspring Dog Training Club (WDTC) in Hewish where Daisy soon impressed the trainers.

“We’d only been training her properly since October and couldn’t believe it when we got the phone call to say she’d been selected for the Inter-Regional team at Crufts. – I nearly fell off my stool,” said Annette.

The team were pipped to first place by the team representing the North of England; however, after finishing last in 2014 the result is a marked improvement.

After the event a proud Annette said: “It was an amazing experience.

“It’s everyone’s dream to get to crufts.

“Daisy has come such a long way since we first fostered her – she wasn’t fazed at all and took it all in her stride.

“We’re both just so proud of her.”
