IT has flashing Christmas trees, illuminated reindeer and there are claims Santa can see it from 10,000 feet.

Trinity Close in Burnham has been called Britain’s most festive street due to the annual display of 100,000 lights by residents.

This week, Mayor Martin Cox delivered a very early Christmas present to all eight houses – a Mayor’s Special Award.

It was in recognition of the unique festive display and the tens of thousand of pounds raised for charity every year.

The Burnham and Highbridge mayor said: “I am presenting all eight houses with a Mayor’s Special Award in recognition of the residents’ outstanding community Christmas lighting and associated charity work over the years.

“I have long admired the ‘wow factor’ of their annual Christmas lights and I wish to put on record my and the Town Council’s appreciation on behalf of everyone who enjoys the display.”

He added: “I understand there are an unbelieveable total of 100,000 lights in the Trinity Close display and that as far as I can tell, it’s become better and brighter each year, with more houses gradually joining in and all adding or changing their lights.”

The display was named by the Daily Mail as ‘Britain’s Most festive Street’ last yer and it was also a runner-up in a GMTV Christmas competition.

Over £60,000 has been raised for various charities since Nick Gardner, 46, and his wife Hazel, 45, started the tradition with neighbours Chris Woodberry, 68, and his late wife Christine.

Visitors are asked to make a donation in a number of collection boxes around Trinity Close. Mrs Gardner said: “It’s lovely really, when I was a child neighbours knew neighbours and neighbours helped neighbours.

With all the lights we have the same kind of attitude here, we all get to know each other. “Lots of people like the lights, lots and lots of people come to see them.

The switch on is always nice, we have a choir, mince pies and mulled wine. It's so nice that we can carry on with it every year, it’s such a lovely community feel.”
