A CHILDREN’S choir from Kenya will arrive next week to sing at a series of fundraising concerts.
Twenty-three youngsters from the Joularabi School, near Mombassa, wil perform at a total of 13 concerts, treating audiences to a selection of traditional African songs and dances.
The visit is part of a UK tour organised by charity Educate the Kids, with local charity workers Sue Stevens and Dorothy May overseeing the choir’s time in Burnham.
Sue, who has been making regular charity trips to Kenya since the 70s, said: “The children really enjoy coming over.
“We’ve done two trips like this – in 2006 and 2008 – and the children had a really great time.
“It gives them a chance to see and do things that they wouldn’t normally be able to do.
“Everyone in Burnham was so welcoming during the previous visits and I’m sure it will be the same this time.”
Through her work with Educate the Kids, Sue has paid several trips to the school to meet children and teachers and says the children selected to be part of the choir return home with more confidence.
She said: “You can tell they’re excited to get back home.
“It’s partly because they want to get back to help their families again but also to show their friends and family what they’ve learned during their trip to England.”
