BRIDGWATER MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has backed a campaign against a new road being built as part of the plan for proposed power pylons.

Residents of East Huntspill are fighting the National Grid in a bid to object to against the building of a new road which will to be used for heavy goods vehicles during the power pylons installation.

The pylons will run through Burnham from Hinkley Point C and out to Avonmouth.

A public meeting was held on Friday, July 10 of which was attended by more than 60 residents of the village, all voicing their opinions ahead of Planning Inspectorate’s feedback deadline.

MP Ian Liddell-Grainger, who represents the village, said: “The National Grid are cocking a snoop at local people.

“They’re essentially saying ‘we’re big, you’re not, we can do what we like'.

“It’s not acceptable. Most big companies will listen to people but the National Grid is just blanking thempeople. It is a terrible way to behave.

“Factory Lane is completely unsuitable for these lorries. There is no reason why they can’t use the A38 which is much safer and it will add virtually no time to the journey.

“Residents in Basonbridge will lose parking to their homes if double yellow lines are painted there.”

Mr Liddell-Grainger has lodged an objection to the grid’s plans and has asked for an immediate meeting, as the parish council and residents feel that the area is already at capacity for any HGV vehicles and an increase will affect safety, wellbeing and the environment.

East Huntspill Parish Council claim they have not been consulted, or been provided with any data despite requests for the details.
