SEVEN orphaned fox cubs are now one step closer to a life on the wild side thanks to carers at Secret World Animal Rescue.

The babies experienced their first joys of the outdoors with their grassy-release pen at the Highbridge charity centre.

The brave cubs – named Ed, Piran, Rufus, Rueben, Rory, Reamus, and Demelza – are just seven of over 30 rescued foxes being rehabilitated at Secret World this year.

After they had been hand-reared, they moved to an indoor pen, before being released into the large outdoor enclosure once the cubs were big enough.

The young foxes will stay in the ir pre-release pen for a few weeks, developing natural behaviours and socialising outdoors without the interference of humans.

Laura Benfield, Head of Animal Care at Secret World, said: “The next stage is to make sure their release site is ready. This all takes a lot of work but it’s worth it for the chance to give these little foxes a life back in the wild where they belong.

“Rearing fox cubs and preparing them for release takes time, care and money. We’re appealing for donations to help us get Ed, Piran and friends back home to the wild this summer.”
