TRIBUTES have poured in after the death of the “strong, family man” who was Burnham sailing club’s commodore.

Ken Sowden, 73, died on August 11 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was well-known in the local community, and was previously a school teacher in both Africa and at The Wells School.

Once retired, Ken and his wife wife Annette set up their own guest house overlooking Wells Cathedral, before later moving to Burnham.

President of Burnham sailing club, David Humphrey, said: “Ken Sowden sadly passed away on Tuesday August 11, following his battle with pancreatic cancer.

“As a previous dinghy instructor and keen yachtsman, he brought his enthusiasm and passion for sailing to the sailing club.

“He loved to participate in sailing races and club cruises whenever he could.

“After the race he would be found in the bar with his glass of red wine discussing sailing tactics.

“He loved to socialise with both his family, friends and club members.

“As commodore and sailing master he worked tirelessly to encourage more people to get on the water.

“More recently he proposed the setting up of a local gig club.

“This is something which we hope to bring to fruition in the near future and this will be his lasting legacy to us all.

“He was a strong family man, colleague, and dear friend.

“Whilst he has passed on, he will not be forgotten by members of the sailing club.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to Annette, and all the family at this difficult time.”

Ken was a very popular member of the sailing club and enjoyed racing in his spare time.

“Ken was a great sailing competitor,” said Sue Walker, editor of the Burnham sailing club newsletter.

“We always enjoyed racing against him.

“He was a good friend and he was a great club member.”

Andy Walker, pontoon officer at the club, said: “Ken was a very good leader and really did get the club blooming.

“He will be very much missed.”

Ken’s funeral will be held on Friday, August 28 at 3.15pm at Sedgemoor Crematorium, Bridgwater.

The wake is to be held at Burnham on Sea Motor Boat and Sailing Club, South Esplanade.
