FIRE crews from Bridgwater and Burnham were called out to a serious fire in a  family home which caused a child to be taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Four fire engines from Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare were called to the scene on Wick Lane, Lympsham, at 10.45pm on Wednesday, August 19.

The blaze had already taken hold of half the house when the fire crews arrived and back-up was requested which came in the form of two more fire crews from Bridgwater and Weston-super-Mare, later followed by a water carrier from Bridgwater and an incident command unit from Street.

Paramedics were called in to treat four people, with a young child taken to hospital as a precaution, however unfortunately the family's terrier died in the blaze.

The extent of the damage to the property means the cause of the fire is not yet known, however the fire is believed to have started in a ground floor utility room of the two-storey house.

The fire was put out by 4.30am but there was severe damage caused to the both floors and the roof.

The crews used a total of eight breathing apparatus, four main jets, three hose reel jets, a safety jet, a triple extension ladder and a thermal imaging camera to put out the blaze.
