A SET of railway buffers has been installed on Burnham’s seafront as the crowning moment of a project to recognise the town’s rail heritage.

A ceremony to mark the moment took place on August 19 on the corner of Pier Street where the structures are placed, at the spot where the town’s former railway line ended.

The reconditioned buffers were formally unveiled at 11am by John Strickland, on behalf of the buffer memorial project team and North Sedgemoor local history group, along with Cllr Bill Hancock, the Deputy Mayor of Burnham and Highbridge.

Thanks were given to businesses and individuals who donated their time and financial investments to the project.

The team of builders who carried out the installation were also praised, as well as Mike Lawrence who stored the buffers on his land for a period of years, before assembling them and delivering them to Pier Street.

The Round Tower Guest House sponsored the flower troughs, so was also commended.

Hymns, readings and prayers were enjoyed by those in attendance in a dedication service by the Rev Graham Witts.

Ann Popham, who was part of the ceremony, said: “It was a lovely service and we are all very pleased with the outcome of the railway buffers.

“Thank you to everyone who was involved.”
