JUST what was going on with the Morrisons’ site in Burnham? I wonder how much the Chamber, the Town Centre Manager or the MP knew about the situation. Was it all just hot air and rumour?

Together with a fellow campaigner to keep the Morrisons supermarket open I went to meet James Heappey and involved him in the Morrisons campaign. (We still have two petitions with a total of nearly 4,000 signatures for the store to stay as a food store.)

We were therefore rather upset that he didn't inform or involve us in the meeting last Friday at the Dunstan Inn. We were told it was a private meeting for traders only. We are willing to book the Methodist Hall for a public meeting so residents can have their say and have approached the MP about this idea but have not had a reply yet.

Despite the news B&M is moving in it is still a real problem for the town with local residents against the deal and wanting a food store. We welcome the jobs and any footfall created must help, but we will lose as many jobs in the town as it will create on the site. It's also a major retailer so the revenue for the store will go out of the town.

Morrisons have behaved badly closing before Christmas and making workers unemployed. Many of those workers are still out of work while others received only short or unsuitable contracts. In the meantime the residents do not have supermarket in the centre of town and many have found it very difficult as a result.
