There was strong opposition to a suggestion put forward at the town council to transform Burnham High Street into an open space where pavements and road are on the same level.

Cllrs Nick Tolley and Peter Burridge Clayton said they were against the idea as “pedestrianisation didn’t work” but Cllr Martin Cox said they had got the wrong end of the stick.

“I think you are missing the point,” said Cllr Cox, “they tried it in Weston and it was successful there. It takes some thought.”

Councillors agreed that enquiries would be made at Somerset County Highways to gather advice to see if the idea could be advanced.
