Following our story about the problems of sand blowing into the road and gardens of residents of Berrow Road we’ve been contacted by David Pope of Atlanta Key.

It is easy to see why the problem is an acute one on a stormy day with sand flying through the air sticking on windscreens, stinging the eyes and covering the road and pavements in dunes. And with so many storms this winter the sand just keeps on piling up.

The problem said Mr Pope is the sand on the beach builds up into a dune below the seawall which stands some six feet high. After a few weeks the sand reaches the top of the wall and then blows straight in their properties and along the roads and pavements. Residents have paid hundreds of pounds for diggers to take the sand away but within a while the sand gathers back up into a dune and the problems starts again.

To make matters worse there are three authorities who could help - but Mr Pope and other residents say they seem unwilling to do anything. The sand and beach is the domain of Sedgemoor District Council, the sea wall is the responsibility of the Environment Agency and the roads and pavements fall under the authority of Somerset Highways.

The roads affected include Poplar Road, Maddocks Slade and Allandale Road although sand blowing in the wind as far as Berrow Road covers cars and creates a fine dust on windows and doors.
