BURNHAM-ON-SEA Coastguards and the BARB search and rescue hovercraft were called into action yesterday after three people got stuck wading through the mud next to Brean Down.

They were called to the incident at 4.20pm to aid the beach-goers, who found themselves unable to move in the mud at low tide.

All three people escaped the situation unscathed, but the scare has prompted a fresh warning from Burnham Search and Rescue about the dangers of low tides.

A spokesperson from the organisation said: “Luckily, when we got there, they had managed to free themselves, but this is a warning to people of the dangers of mud on the beach.

"We advise people to always check tide times, and stay away from soft sand on the beach.”

Burnham Coastguards were also keen to make people aware of the dangers, they said:“Our advice is always to heed the warning signs and stay away from the muddy areas of the beach.

“Never try to reach the sea at low tide, and if you see anyone in danger, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”

Burnham-on-sea coastguards were also called out at 3.15pm on Sunday to search for a missing child on Brean Beach who was found safe and well shortly afterwards.
