PREPARATIONS are well underway for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in Burnham-on-Sea.

Plans are coming together for the three days of family entertainment on the seafront and the beach from June 10 to June 12 to celebrate the milestone birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

The council funded event will include a tug-of-war competition, a concert and a youth parade.

Organiser Gaynor Brown said: “The weather, at the moment, is supposed to be absolutely brilliant, and it will be a great three days.”

The event begins on Friday, June 10 with a paper aeroplane competition from 12pm to 2pm, followed by a game of ‘chaos football’ from 2pm to 4pm.

Ms Brown said: “Chaos football is a big game of football with four balls, so it is quite chaotic.

“The players have to keep their hands behind their back, and last year we had over 120 goals.

“The game will be Burnham against the rest of the world, and the rest of the world won last year.”

Saturday will see a tug-of-war challenge from 12pm to 2pm, and if you think you can challenge BARB Search and Rescue for the title, you can enter a team by calling 01278 238 714.

Ms Brown said: “The BARB guys like to think they can beat anyone.”

The tug-of-war will be followed by a Royal fancy dress competition, with prizes for the best costumes, and then there will be a concert by the beach.

Ms Brown said: “We have three local bands playing, The Bostock Breeze, The Burnham and Highbridge Brass Band, and Rustique.

“The concert will start off with the town crier, who is brilliant, and then after the bands, we then have an hour of Elvis Presley, who was great when he performed last year, it was as cheesy as you can get, but it was really good.

“We have had to make a stage especially for the event, and it will be set up by the bay view café along with 40 chairs.

Sunday will see a unique sand boat race at 2pm, as well as zorb balls and a youth parade.

“For the sand boat competition we will be making as many boats as we can out of sand, and when it is finished it will hopefully look like a fleet of boats across the beach.

“Last year when we did a sand castle competition, and we made nearly a thousand sand castles.

“The youth parade sets off with the town crier at the front, and will parade along the beach and up the jetty, with the mayor greeting the parade on the beach.
