TRAVELLERS have once again pitched up at Pier Street car park in Burnham-On-Sea, following similar recent gatherings on the sea front and at the BASC sports ground.

The group, that includes several vans and motorhomes, as well as horse boxes, set up camp in the car park yesterday.

Sedgemoor District Council (SDC) has confirmed they are aware of the situation, and have begun the necessary processes to vacate them.

Court proceedings have now been set for Monday, July 18 at 10.00 in Weston-super-Mare.

SDC only take action against travellers when they occupy land owned by the Council.

Once the Council has been made aware of an unauthorised occupation, they can then begin the lengthy process to evict them, starting with the travellers being issued with a letter asking them to vacate within 24 hours.

If they do not vacate, an application is made to the County Court for a Possession Order and notice of a hearing is then served on the travellers.

The travellers must be given three clear days’ notice of the hearing, and if they still do not vacate, the council attends the court hearing and seeks an order for possession.

This is then served on the travellers the same day with the instruction that they vacate within 24 hours, and if this does not happen, the police and bailiffs are called in to assist with their removal.
