THE next generation of doctors has started work at Weston General Hospital.

More than 60 junior doctors, known as foundation year one doctors have joined as part of a two-year foundation programme after leaving medical school.

They will spend time shadowing senior doctors, surgeons and consultants for a week of education and clinical supervision before they begin working the wards at the hospital.

The newly qualified doctors will work across a wide range of specialities, including medicine and surgery.

Dr Nick Lyons, medical director of Weston Area Health NHS Trust, said: “I’m delighted that these doctors are starting their careers in Weston. Our Trust is an excellent place to put years of training into practice and to learn new skills.

“We’re happy to be welcoming doctors from various backgrounds – they will bring with them different experiences and fresh approaches which will only be of benefit to the trust.

“We take the responsibility of training the next generation of doctors very seriously, ensuring that they have a positive experience learning from senior doctors and consultants. I know our senior staff will teach them all they need to know to become excellent doctors.

“These doctors are also joining us at an exciting time with the future holding lots of promise. Our aspiration is to continue our improvement as an innovative hospital at the heart of an evolving and changing NHS – we welcome them joining us on that journey and I hope they enjoy working here.”

Dr Andrew Demetri, who begins his career as a doctor, said: “I’m really happy to be joining Weston as it’s a small, friendly trust with a great atmosphere.

"I’ve heard some great things about the hospital and its staff and I’m excited to get started.”
