CONTROVERSIAL proposals to put 16 holiday homes into Apex Park have been dropped.

This means the BMX club in Apex Park will not have to relocate to a larger site nearer Burnham-on-Sea.

Earlier this year it looked as though Sedgemoor District Council was set to lease the BMX track to Bourne Leisure for a period of 50 years, but the proposals sparked an outcry from town councillors and local residents.

The Bourne Leisure proposal has now been dropped and at an Extraordinary meeting held on Monday, Burnham and Highbridge town council heard that Sedgemoor District Council would not be considering a proposal for changes to the BMX site at the September meeting of the Executive.

The town council says it is pleased that the BMX club has a home at Apex Park, and happy for the BMX track to continue on the site.

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton proposed that should the BMX club move from Apex Park in the future, the town council would like to enter into discussions with Sedgemoor District Council to level the site and restore the land for other recreational uses, such as adding a multi-use games area.

The proposal was seconded by Cllr Phil Harvey and was passed unanimously.

A spokesman for Burnham and Highbridge Town Council said: "This would be an ideal opportunity for partnership working between the two councils, and the project would be subject to suitable finances and Sedgemoor adopting the land and equipment."

The decision follows a long dispute over the use of the land involving the BMX club, the town and district councils, the Friends of Apex Park group and Bourne Leisure which has been debated since April of last year.

Two of the most vocal district councillors in opposition to the plan were husband and wife Roger and Janet Keen, who issued a statement urging the district council not to allow the caravan park to happen but to 'retain Apex in its entirety as a publicly owned and managed asset'.

Speaking at the meeting on Monday Cllr Janet Keen said there were many councillors who had fought long and hard to get this positive result.
