BURNHAM-ON-SEA RNLI volunteers were called to reports of a 'mysterious object' that had been spotted in the River Parrett Estuary.
Apparently, from the shore it looked like it could have been an upturned boat, and crew members swiftly set off to investigate on Wednesday, September 7 at 3.34pm.
The D Class lifeboat Puffin was promptly launched. The crew found the object appeared to be plastic gas service piping, which proved at that time to be difficult to move.
The team attached a buoy to the piping, in preparation for the evening’s programmed training launch, of the larger Atlantic 75 lifeboat Staines Whitfield.
Upon reaching the object that evening, the crew in the larger lifeboat were able to recover the piping and bring it to Burnham jetty for safe disposal
Lifeboat Helmsman Nick Prout said: "We recovered a length of plastic gas piping approximately thirty meters long.
"It was floating both above and below the surface of the water, and would have been a hazard to local water users."
