A BANKSY-STYLE artwork appeared in Burnham-on-Sea this week much to the surprise of residents.

The spray paint art was a huge attraction in the town and puzzled residents as they were unsure whether the work was authentic.

The painting adds to a collection of works around Burnham done as by the Spray Jam group and has become a talking point in the town.

Becky Hewlitt, organiser of the Burnham Spray Jam said: "We were very excited to see a ‘Banksy’ appear in Burnham however, it now looks like it’s the work of Bristol artist John D’Oh.

"The plot thickens...John D’Oh was the creator of the Massive Attack ‘Banksy’ piece that appeared on the Downs the night of the Massive Attack performance so really, who knows?

"We’re very happy anyway because it’s got everyone in town talking and coming to follow our street art trail which is permanent.

"Guides are available at the tourist information office. "

Beverley Milner Simonds, Burnham town centre manager, said: "Spray Jam caused a stir in the town and further afield.

"I understand that the organiser is a friend of the artist who uses the moniker "Banksy" - it is nice edition to the collection of artworks around the town.

"Turner came and painted the bay in 1800 and we are starting to fill the town with art and artists.

"But, you don't have to be an internationally famous artist to enjoy a day out by the sea - everyone is welcome."
