HUGE crowds gathered at Burnham-on-Sea's war memorial to commemorate Remembrance Day.

The procession on November 13 was led by Burnham's Mayor, Councillor Michael Clarke as he was accompanied by representatives from Burnham's Scout group, TS Dulverton and Weston and other local groups and walked down to Burnham War Memorial to pay their respects.

The remembrance ceremony was conducted by Reverend Graham Witts, Vicar of Burnham-on-Sea and saw dignitaries from local groups lay wreaths to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers of the first world war.

At 11am the crowds went silent for two minutes to remember all of the British soldiers lost in the first and second world war and in the Iraq war.

This was followed by playing of the Last Post and finished with the singing of the National Anthem.

Burnham Mayor, Councillor Michael Clarke said: "It was lovely to see so many people out to attend the parade and to see the service by the war memorial at the hospital.

"The British Legion did a great job at putting the event together and with getting the road closures ready in time.

"They have always been our organisers for this event and have done an amazing job with the new management committee they have in place.

"It was great to see so many young people come out to attend from the local scouts, army cadets, sea cadets and brownies marching with us down the street.

"It is wonderful that the message is still being passed on to young people.

"Lest we forget."
