BURNHAM-on-Sea RNLI have issued a warning to residents to take care when walking near beaches in the winter months due to the changeable nature of the coastline.

The warning comes after Wellington man, Mark Phillips went missing near Burnham and a major search operation was launched when his car was found abandoned near Steart Marshes on November 13.

Avon and Somerset Police, Burnham-on-Sea RNLI and BARB were all involved in a late-night search on Sunday for the Wellington man near Burnham-on-Sea.

Police began an investigation into his disappearance and Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and members from BARB Search and Rescue were called out to carry out a search of the shoreline.

Two RNLI lifeboats were launched to search the river banks and tide line towards Hinkley Point after a set of footprints was said to be discovered in the mud of the river.

A coastguard helicopter was flown around the area in search for Mr Phillips who was later found on November 14 safe and well.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: " Missing Wellington man Mark Phillips has been located.

"The 56-year-old was found in the Steart Marshes area earlier this afternoon.

"We’d like to thank all the search and rescue teams involved in this operation, as well as the public for assisting with our appeal.

"To report a missing person call 101 or visit your local police station.

"If it is an emergency and you feel that the missing person may be at risk of immediate harm, dial 999."

Lifeboat Press Officer, Mike Lang said getting lost when the beaches are dark is easy to do and has issued some tips, urging residents to be safe when walking near the beaches late at night this winter.

He said:"Areas of coastline which may appear harmless during the day, can change character drastically when darkness falls.

"It is easy to become disoriented and lose your bearings.

"If you are walking at night take a torch, take note of the tidal times, let someone know where you expect to be and when.

"Above all, if you are in unfamiliar surroundings stick to a known safe path.

"Too often, coastguard rescue teams are called out to locate disoriented walkers on our beach at Burnham, Berrow and Brean, which is not easy, even if there is contact via mobile phone."
