A BURNHAM-ON-SEA opticians has given out 200 high visibility vests to two local schools to mark Road Safety Week (November 21-27).

Specsavers on the High Street in Burnham handed over the vests to East Huntspill and West Huntspill Schools in a bid to make sure the pupils are seen when out and about and on the walk to and from school.

"The road safety message is important all year round but particularly during the winter when the days are shorter," said store director Rama Venkat.

"We’re hoping the high-vis vests will ensure the youngsters can be seen clearly during the dark mornings and nights as well as whenever they go out on school trips.

James Peate, headteacher at both schools, said: "We’re very grateful to Specsavers for this donation.

"As well as making the children more visible, hopefully the vests will also help give parents peace of mind."

The theme of this year’s Road Safety Week is Make the Brake Pledge, which details six key things people can do to protect themselves and the people around them, and reduce emissions and pollution from vehicles.

The six Brake Pledge points are: Slow, Sober, Secure, Silent, Sharp and Sustainable.
