MORE than 20 people gathered last weekend to clear up Burnham-on-Sea beach.

Armed with litter pickers and rubbish bags the volunteers found some interesting items while cleaning up the rubbish logged beach.

Mark Hollidge, organiser of the beach clean said: “It was an excellent day.

“About 22 people including myself gave up their time to clean up the beach and there was a real sense that people in the area wanted to look after their area. It was the highest turnout we have had so far.

“Quite often it is hard to get people to come out but I was really pleased with the turnout.

“Normally when we do a clean up we find quite a lot of plastic and syringes but this time we found some old shotgun cases, fishing lines and a lobster pot.

“It is really nice to see the coast clean after just a few hours of hard work.”

The event was organised by The Friends of Burnham beach and Mark says there will be another beach clean on March 11.

“We always try to time the clean-ups to match with the tide and I think more people will be coming to the next one.

“I would urge anyone thinking about joining in to come out and help, it really does make a difference to the coastline.”
