A HARDWARE shop in Burnham-on-Sea could be turned into flats if plans are approved for a new development.

Salways Hardware on Regent Street, which closed in 2015 could be turned into a development with one one bedroom flat and five two bedroom flats and could be extended to the rear to create a courtyard if plans are approved by Sedgemoor District Council.

The applicant, WE Salway Limited is seeking full planning permission to change the use of the building from commercial to residential use to create a new development of flats on the site.

The hardware shop closed its doors in 2015 after a century of trading as the store struggled to compete with larger DIY outlets and online stores.

But a resident on George Street says he does not think there will be enough parking to accomodate the new development.

David Eldergill, a resident on George Street said: "The height and the proximity of the development would be such that unreasonable overshadowing would occur.

"The development does not include any off road parking.

"There would be a significant impact upon road safety due to there being insufficient exisiting on road parking for six dwellings."

Plans for the new flats will be discussed at Burnham and Highbridge Town Council's planning committee on Monday March 21.
