BURNHAM-on-Sea Coastguard Rescue were called to help a person who was possibly entering the low tide along Burnham beach.

The team was called at 2.16pm on March 27 after a member of the public had spotted someone down on the tide line who had then disappeared out of view.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team said: "This stretch of beach has a set of mud shelves that go quite a way down to the waters edge, while some of it is fairly firm there are a lot of places where it is soft, if you get into difficulty down there no-one would be able to see you.

"While two of our mud techs kitted up, one of the team spotted the person who was walking back along the beach towards the town slip.

"Our two Mud Techs continued to investigate the tideline to ensure there was no-one else out there.

"We always do this to be 100 per cent sure we have the right person and that there isn't someone else in danger.

"In this case, the tide line was clear and the person in question was approached to ensure he was ok.

"He was a fisherman collecting any lead weights lost from local fishing events.

"Unfortunately not everyone is always pleased to see us and this chap was a bit unhappy being approached.

"We are only there for public safety and not every job requires a rescue, sometimes a friendly welfare check is all that is needed.

"The person who called it in was 100 per cent right to do so, that stretch of beach is very low and it isn't long before you are out of sight."

If you ever see a person in danger around the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard
