A NURSING home near Weston-super-Mare has enlisted the help of its community to give its garden a makeover.

Summer Lane Care Home in Worle is taking part in 'Country Court Care in Bloom', a company wide gardening competition designed to encourage care home residents to enjoy gardening and outside spaces.

Staff at the home were joined by volunteers from the community for their 'Big Dig' on April 8.

April Lewis, wellbeing and activities coordinator, said: “We had a great response to our call for volunteers”

“It gave me a real sense of satisfaction to think that this small idea ended up being so well supported locally, it will give a big boost to our Country Court Care in Bloom initiative."

Parents and children from the Wick St Lawrence Beavers colony as well as volunteers from local businesses came along to help with the makeover.

The team of staff and volunteers turned the back garden of time care home into a vegetable and herb garden for residents to enjoy and spent a lot of time weeding and digging over soil ready for planting.

The newly improved garden will continue to take shape over the course of the summer with residents already planting seeds and planning the next stage of the project.

Miss Lewis, added: “The new garden area will be a great asset for the home in the long-term, not just for this project.

“It’s really important to encourage our residents to continue to enjoy their hobbies and interests, especially for those living with dementia.

"We are very excited to be moving on to phase two of the project and thank all those involved so far."
