A BURNHAM community group has won an award for its contribution to society.

Hands of Change Burnham and Surrounding Area was presented the Sedgemoor Star Volunteer Award by charity Spark.

The group was started in January 2016 when a small group of people wanted to "do some good" in Burnham and Highbridge. A year and a half later, the group now has more than 500 members.

The charity chose Hands of Change as it said it is particularly good at spotting gaps in provision.

A few recent activities include painting an older couple's fence and raising money for a young homeless man to find somewhere to stay.

Steve Ballinger, a community agent who nominated the group, said: “I’m delighted that Hands of Change has won the award for Sedgemoor.

"Hands of Change is a truly inspirational group that has already helped improved the lives of people in Burnham, Highbridge and surround areas.

"It’s brilliant that their efforts have been recognised in this way.”

Kay Barrett, who created the group, said:"We are over the moon to get this award, we do what we do to help others and don't expect anything in return.

"To be both nominated and chosen for the award is more than we would ever have expected we are so proud and thankful."

Leonie Girling, Spark volunteering officer, said: “We are proud to support this very special campaign to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who play such a vital role across the county. Hands of Change is a deserved winner."
