SINCE the Brean Down Way cycle route opened last month its has proved popular with dog walkers, cyclists and runners.

But Dr John Kirkhope, of the friends of Brean Down Way, said the group is in need of volunteers to maintain the path and collect donations so it can remain open.

“We are on the lookout for volunteers who are prepared to spare a couple of hours every two weeks or so in the summer and autumn to help us cut back brambles and clear undergrowth” he said. “It takes a lot of work to maintain the path and we need volunteers to help us do this.

“This path is unusual in that the charity has taken on leases with obligations for example Public Liability insurance so initially we are looking to raise £2,000 per year to keep the path going.

“We need people who are prepared to shake buckets, collect donations and distribute leaflets so we can keep this path open for as long as possible.”

The eight-mile cycle and walking route was opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw on July 7 after nearly 20 years’ planning.

Dr Kirkhope said no training is needed to be a volunteer, just a good attitude and some gardening tools.

“We are really hoping that we get some willing volunteers through the door as we want to keep the route open.”
