BURNHAM-on-Sea's High Street will become a makeshift runway when the 3rd World Paper Aeroplane Championship lands in town.

Paper folding skills, accuracy and athleticism will be required as hundreds of competitors will choose from different designs on August 20 to create their own paper aeroplane from a single sheet of paper, with the aim of launching their planes as far as possible.

Darts, jets and gliders are the favourite options although competitors can indulge themselves and attempt a stealth bomber.

Sally Raynes, event director at Wacky Nation said “We will be expecting a few aborted take-offs, plenty of turbulence and the odd crash landing along the way.”

Detailed instructions for different plane designs and many more will be available for competitors to create their own paper aeroplane in an instant.

The less ‘Boe-ing’ the better is the message from the organisers, Wacky Nation, but only supplied paper can be used with nothing added to the entry.

Entrants will then launch their plane down the high street hoping it doesn’t crash land within seconds.

The winner will be whoever manages to reach the furthest distance before landing.

The current course record is 34.3 metres.

The free event is provided by Burnham-on-Sea Chamber of Trade & Commerce in conjunction with Sedgemoor District Council.

The event will run between 10am and 3pm on High Street.
