A WOMAN was taken to hospital after she was thrown from her horse on Brean beach.

The woman was riding her horse along the beach at around 10am on August 12 when her horse was spooked by a dog and threw her to the ground.

Burnham RNLI lifeguards had not long come on shift and quickly helped the woman.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said: "After assessing her injuries they placed her onto a spinal board and head immobiliser to keep her as still as possible and requested an ambulance.

"Due to her location and the incoming tide they had to move her further up the beach.

"We were tasked to assist the lifeguards with moving her once the ambulance arrived.

"When we arrived on scene, we noticed a fair wind was blowing in off the sea so using the truck and stretchers we created a giant windbreak to shield the rider and ensured she stayed warm.

"The RNLI Lifeguards and Coastguard team turns in stabilising her head.

"Once the ambulance arrived and had assessed her we carried her to the ambulance which was situated in a car park off of the beach and she was transferred to hospital, where we hope she makes a full recovery and is back riding again soon.

"The dog owner was very upset that this incident had happened and came and spoke to the rider as she was boarding the Ambulance to apologise.

"A good response from the RNLI Lifeguards, the Beach Wardens were also on hand to assist, and the beach tea wagon helped out with some refreshments while we waited.

"Seamless working between agencies to ensure that the casualty received the best care we can provide."
