CONTROVERSIAL plans to build 35 retirement apartments on a derelict site in Burnham-on-Sea could be one step closer to being realised if a reserved matters planning application is approved.

Developer, Abracore, secured planning permission to build two three storey buildings housing 35 retirement apartments on the former site of Tuckers Garage on Victoria Street in 2014 on the condition that a planning application for landscaping of the site was approved no more than three years after permission was given.

The developer's plans were originally turned down by Sedgemoor District Council in 2013 due to concerns that the building would undermine the character and appearance of the town's street scene and a lack of off-street parking.

But just a few days before the three year deadline lapsed, Abracore submitted a reserved matters planning application to landscape the site.

The developer wants to install new paving that looks aged in appearance as well as new curbs, flagstones and textured paving slabs.

The controversial plans were not popular with Burnham residents when they were first submitted in 2013 with many saying the application should be refused.

Mark Newman, chairman of Burnham Chamber of Trade objected to the plans as he said the plans only gave provision for 19 car parking spaces and 13 cycle spaces.

In his letter to SDC, Mr Newman said the proposals 'contravened' Somerset County Council's parking strategy and said that limited on-street parking could be used by visitors to the site and could ' affect the ongoing viability and vitality of local businesses.'

Parishioners at St Andrews Church on South Street also objected to the plans on parking grounds, saying there would not be enough car parking spaces for residents.

The church adjoins the site and in a letter to SDC, parishioners said they have fears that residents will come and park at the church hall due to a lack of parking spaces.

Residents have until October 24 to comment on the application after which a decision will be made by Sedgemoor District Council.
