SEDGEMOOR District Council is looking to introduce a number of new Public Space Protection Orders which will see people receive £100 fines if caught drinking in public places, taking dogs into certain areas or even night fishing.

Consultation has been carried out and now a number of orders have been proposed relating to dog control, alcohol and legal high consumption, amplified music, night fishing, camping and direction to move on at various locations within Sedgemoor.

The orders give enforcement powers for Fixed Penalty Notices to Sedgemoor District Council, and prosecution for breaches of the orders.

The majority of alcohol control areas, legal highs and psychoactive substances and directions to move on pertain to the Bridgwater area.

However in Burnham there is one noticeable order which will see fines handed out if amplified music is played without permission in Manor Gardens.

This was suggested by Avon and Somerset Police who reported: "We received lots of complaints last year about groups using portable speakers in Manor Gardens."

Responding to the consultation, one Burnham publican responded saying more needs to be done to stop anti-social behaviour from certain licensed establishments in the town.

"I feel the current PSPO inadequately deals with the major issue of anti-social behaviour within and immediately around some licensed premises – I feel the PSPO should be in place 24/7 to protect the public at all times.

"Sadly, there are many publicans whose only focus is on taking money and who repeatedly fail to ensure their premises are safe places to be in or pleasant places to be around.

"Anti-social behaviour often takes place in and around licensed premises during the daytime and evening and more needs to be done to tackle this problem – with or without the landlord’s compliance."

New dog exclusion areas have been added to the children's play areas at Orchard Close in East Brent and Mayflower Court, Highbridge.
