The vulnerable person was last seen somewhere near the Grand Pier in Weston.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard, said: "The tide was at it's lowest for the day, with the sun glowing red and the sky taking on a strange tint, two Weston Coastguards kitted up in full rescue gear including dry suits, Personal Flotation Device (PFD), safety hats and safety boots for a search of the old Birnbeck Pier."

The Weston team was taken to exposed rocks on the island by Weston Lifeboat crews and carried out a foot search.

While the Weston team searched on the island, Burnham Coastguard did a foot search along the rocks on the shpre from Birnbeck and headed south to Knightstone Island.

"The rest of the Burnham Coastguards teamed up with BARB Hovercraft team who had arrived on scene, and a foot search was commenced in two teams.

"The first team who were also in full wet rescue kit conducted a tough shoreline search along the exposed rocks towards Sand Bay, and the second team performed a foot search along the road checking any cliff paths and overhangs as they went.

"Once this was completed, all teams were diverted to the beach and seafront for a final drive search.

"With all our requested search areas covered, and with the same nothing found outcome, we were stood down at around 2pm to return to the station for another clean down and readiness check.

"The Police were continuing their enquiries and who knows if more actionable information comes to light we may be back.

"Fingers crossed this person is found and is safe and well."
