WORK to improve junction 23 of the M5 is to be delayed while the plan is 'reassessed for value for money reasons', it has been announced.

Highways England has revealed the M5 Bridgwater scheme at the A39 interchange at the site is being moved back to the next five-year delivery plan programme, which runs from 2021 until 2025.

The scheme is being delayed while work to develop the best solution for the local area and to achieve improved value for money for the taxpayer is carried out, the organisation said.

Under the scheme, the slip roads at junction 23 on the M5 would be widened, as Highways England says the junction 'currently suffers from queueing and delays at peak hours and seasonal times'.

It said the works would also support economic growth in the Sedgemoor district and the development of Hinkley Point C.

This scheme is however separate to the ongoing works at Dunball associated with the new Park and Ride for Hinkley C.

The decision came as Highways England updated its £15 billion road improvement programme to reduce the impact of roadworks on motorists and minimise congestion while improvements take place.

Plans for 26 road upgrades have been revised to reduce roadworks taking place in the same area of the network or on popular journey routes at the same time, Highways England said, meaning less congestion for motorists as Highways England embarks on the biggest road upgrade plan for a generation.

The changes were revealed in the supplementary Delivery Plan, which outlines major schemes in the coming years.

The plan will see Highways England rescheduling its programme for the schemes between three and 24 months – meaning a number of schemes will be completed earlier than planned.

All are still set for delivery as part of the Government’s first road investment strategy.

Jim O’Sullivan, Highways England chief executive, said: “Our update today is a sensible and responsible way to deliver major national investment in road infrastructure.

"It will keep our roads moving, deliver a lasting legacy for the country and ensure best value for money for the taxpayer.”
