'Journey of a lifetime' for Burnham man

A BURNHAM man is preparing to brave blistering heat and freezing nights to raise money for a cancer charity close to his heart.

Steve Radford, 28, will embark on a journey of a lifetime exploring the Grand Canyon in Arizona in aid of Cancer Research UK next May.

Both Steve's mother and mother-in-law were diagnosed with different forms of cancer in recent years - proving to be the catalyst for his incredible challenge.

Steve said: “In the past five years, my mother and my wife's mother have both had different forms of cancer, and my grandparents have also had cancer in recent times.

“This drove me to think if I know this many people that have had a form of cancer then I am sure those around me do too.

“This is a huge problem and we need to do all we can to help.

“I truly believe it is down to the strength people have shown, coupled with the work Cancer Research UK undertakes, which has enabled my family and others to come through cancer.”

The father-of-one who works as a savings and investment manager and runs a Burnham basketball club is urging people to snap up tickets for a diamond ball fundraising dinner at the Webbington Hotel on November 28.

He will spend ten days trekking across the Grand Canyon tackling a variety of obstacles including the challenging terrain.

He said: “I will be surviving the blistering daytime heat and freezing night temperatures and some days I will be trekking up to 32kms - with each night spent under canvas.”

Dawn Harrison, area volunteer manager for Cancer Research UK added: “Steve has set himself an extremely tough challenge, in what is probably going to be a journey of a lifetime.

“To think of supporting Cancer Research UK on such an exciting trip is truly admirable.”
