POLICE have this week warned boy racers terrorising Burnham's seafront - kill your speed or we'll crush your cars.

Anti-social drivers in the town are being targeted in a major police operation following a campaign started by Esplanade residents fed up with speeding youths making their lives hell.

Operation Go Slow has so far seen 20 drivers issued with notices warning them if they re-offend, their vehicles will be seized and possibly crushed.

Two vehicles have already been seized while 13 drivers and two moped riders aged between 16-24 who were caught driving anti-socially have paid to go on a driver education course instead of receiving a fixed penalty fine.

Sgt Ian Kennett, from the Burnham Coastal Safer, Stronger Neighbourhood Team, said: “We realise the effect speeding and anti-social driving has on local people and are doing everything possible to enforce and educate drivers to reduce the problem.

“Local officers have spent many hours targeting offenders with fixed penalty notices, but are also doing everything possible to educate drivers and try and ensure they do not re-offend.”

Esplanade resident Ian Halsey has spoken out against the boy racers he says have terrorised him and his family for months - sometimes keeping them awake into the early hours and issuing verbal threats.

He said: “There has been a marked improvement in the last couple of weeks and the police should be commended for their efforts.

“I still think there is a long way to go before we crack it - they still congregate in Somerfield car park - but we are on the right road.”
