Cash relief for Wedmore Village Hall repairs

WITH only days left until work begins on Wedmore village hall's new £75,000 roof, the fundraising committee breathed a huge sigh of relief when they secured a grant for nearly £20,000.

Work on the roof is scheduled to start on July 20, and after an original estimate of £45,000 jumped up £30,000, the committee was feeling the heat.

But waste management company Viridor Credits stepped in and now the revamp project is due to go ahead as planned.

The committee had to revise its original target after deciding replacing the roof would be an ideal opportunity to bring the small but well-used hall into the 21st century by carrying out further improvements.

Chairman David Summers-Cooke said: “The village hall is the focal point for so much of Wedmore's public life.

“In common with all buildings of its age, wear and tear, the weather and the heavy continuous traffic along the Cheddar Road have taken their toll.

“So, the replacement of the leaking flat roof over the rear of the building became our most important priority.

“Thanks to the generous grant made by Viridor Credits, we have virtually attained our revised target of £75,000. We are deeply grateful to them.”

Further fundraising events are planned in the village to reach the outstanding £7,000 and the roof repairs are expected to be finished by the middle of August.

David added: “The hall provides the people of the village, old and young, with a wonderful social centre. Without it Wedmore would be a poorer place.”
