HIGH temperatures and fine weather saw a busy flurry of tourists flocking to Burnham at the weekend as the town’s ‘busiest September ever’ came to a close.

On Sunday the continuing summer conditions saw temperatures rise to 23C, prompting a wave of visitors arriving to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather.

Gill Hills, owner of Burnham business Crafty Teacup, said she saw a noticeable increase in trade compared to this time last year.

“It has been quite busy, better than last year and that is mainly down to the weather I think.

She added: “We also run a children’s craft club every Saturday which is becoming very popular now and in November we are opening a new craft room and chocolate and cake boutique.”

St Aubyn’s guesthouse owner Mark Leeson also said that he had seen a significant rise in the amount of trade in Burnham this September.

He said: “Looking at the accounts from the past five years we have seen trade that’s well above previous years.

“We have had full occupancy for the past few days which isn’t bad when you consider we’ve got seven rooms and that’s definitely down to the good weather in September.”

According to Mark Newman, chairman of Burnham’s Chamber of Trade and Commerce, the town’s businesses have seen a boost in all sectors – from clothing to food and accommodation.

“It’s a very welcome boost and really good news, particularly after the slow start to the year because of the flooding.

“The streets and the shops are much busier than they were in previous Septembers.”
