STUDENTS at The King Alfred School in Highbridge are this week heading for two of the world's best universities – as dozens of younger students now line up an inspirational trip to Oxford University.

Burnham student Bethan Marshall, aged 18, will start her Cambridge University studies in natural science after gaining 3 A*s and an A at A-level in mathematics, further mathematics, chemistry and physics.

Meanwhile Ashley Benton, also 18, is to study physics at University College London which has just been ranked as the fifth best university in the world.

Now dozens of other talented students at the school have been selected to visit Oxford University on a tour hosted by former King Alfred School student Dr Andrew Beaumont, who is a member of the academic staff.

Up to 30 gifted and talented students from Years 10 and 11 will now make the trip to Oxford.

Bethan aims to help other current King Alfred School students to fulfil their potential and assist them in their goal of following in her footsteps by aiming high and attending the UK’s leading institutions.

Bethan said: “Going to Cambridge is a testament of much hard work.

“I’m ecstatic to know that I will be taught by people who don't just teach science, but are making the discoveries that they are teaching about.

“It’s a privilege to think that other people will be inspired to follow their wildest dreams in the same way that I did."

Head teacher Denise Hurr said: "We are extremely proud of Bethan and Ashley, and all our students, in their achievements.

“These universities are among the best in the world and we want to support and encourage as many of our students as possible to go there.

“We tell our students often that they can achieve their dreams and to aim for the very best."

Bethan received constant support from The King Alfred School including mock interviews, specialist tuition from Cambridge graduates and guidance through the application process.
