FURIOUS residents have set up a petition against a planned expansion to the Isleport Business Park near Highbridge, which they say would be dangerous.

Sedgemoor District Council announced proposals at the beginning of July to expand the business park.

They say they have identified three areas of land for the potential extension which they say would be a “key source of employment for the residents of Highbridge and Burnham”

and could create up to 1,000 jobs.

A consultation began last week, asking residents for their views, but now a petition objecting to the proposals has also been set up by Claire Goldie on Change.org She said: “This planned development is strongly linked to Hinkley Point a nuclear power station.

“The development of this area will be detrimental to animals and the vast amount of surrounding wildlife that live here.

“Not only will it increase noise pollution, road traffic and human waste, but will create an eyesore upon entering the town of Highbridge.

“This area has already had development and as residents we have all experienced massive increases in traffic which has made it a dangerous area for both elderly and children.”

The petition has already received 100 signatures.

Phil Reddish from Burnham added: “There is a total disregard for the local residents, we had the motorway foisted on us now you want to surround the site in business units.”

“An alternative location could be found that does not have such a major impact on residents.”

A spokesperson for the district council said: “The petition represents the views of people and will be taken into consideration.”
