It was the biggest night of the year in Burnham and Highbridge this week. Monday’s carnival pulled in tens of thousands of people onto the streets as the towns put on an amazing show of light, sound, performance and action.

To celebrate there’s a special supplement inside this week’s Weekly News with all the stories, results and pictures covering the event that’s part of the Bridgwater and Somerset carnival circuit. The season began at the weekend at Bridgwater and continues with Weston’s carnival tomorrow and North Petherton’s on Saturday.

Our own Hillview Carnival Club based in Highbridge did exceptionally well coming in second in the junior open cart section and bringing huge enjoyment with their It’s a Cracker take on Christmas. For full details turn to page 17 in the newspaper and feast your eyes on the dazzling images.

People came from far and wide - and some even came from Bridgwater to see it all over again like Jodie Kingston. She and her friends were well wrapped up sitting in picnic chairs in the High Street.

She said: "My favourites were Gremlins from Bridgwater and Toppers who are from North Petherton. I liked both of them because of the lights as they were so different instead of the normal plain lights. It's a bit easier to see the carnival here as there's not so many people so we came over. Normally in the past I'd miss it was used to be a taxi driver and I'd be working. I love it."

If like Jodie you fancy seeing it all over again or you missed part of it then the show moves onto Weston-super-Mare this Friday when most of the carts will be there again. The following day the carnival moves to North Petherton on Saturday.

There are two final legs to the season. Next week on Wednesday, November 18 the carts arrive in Shepton Mallet before completing the circuit on Friday, November 20, in Wells and the finale in Glastonbury the next day on Saturday, November 21.

After that it's time for the club members to begin unpacking, parking their cart in their club's shed and to grab some sleep.
