FAMILY, work colleagues and friends of Lewis Rogers have been stunned by his death in a car crash at Dunball last week.

Mr Rogers who worked at Highbridge was declared dead at the crash site on the roundabout at Dunball on the A38 on Sunday morning after the car he was in had smashed into a tree.

Fellow workers at BFP Wholesale in Highbridge were shocked to hear of his death. A spokesman for the company said their thoughts were with his family – especially coming as it did just before Christmas.

The firm said he was a valued member of the team at the depot and would be greatly missed.

He had only been with there for a short time but had made a big impact.

Mr Rogers was in the seat of the BMW along with another passenger who has been seriously injured in the crash.

Police reported that the driver and front seat passenger had survived and initially had attempted to leave the scene but were detained.

Skid marks and tyre tracks reveal how the crash happened in the early hours of Sunday, December 20.

The car was heading down the A38 from Pawlett when it failed to stop at the roundabout. It then crossed the small keep left triangle of grass taking with it part of a road sign, crossed the main road smashed into another road sign and continued across the grass before hitting the tree.

Police said they were appealing for witnesses following the fatal crash.

They said in a statement: “A BMW driving along the A38 on the Bristol Road, was travelling from Pawlett towards Bridgwater but failed to negotiate the roundabout at Dunball. It crossed to the centre of the roundabout and was in collision with a tree, resulting in serious injury to the two rear seat passengers.

“One of them died at the scene shortly afterwards and the other was taken with serious injuries to hospital. Two men in the front of the car tried to leave the scene and were detained. They were both over the drink drive limit and have been arrested.”

Meanwhile the BMW has been taken away by police for examination while all that remains are tyre tracks across the grass ending at the trunk of the tree which had been gashed by the impact. Bunches of flowers have been left at the scene along with poignant cards to Lewis.

Police said: “We are keen to trace anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen the incident or helped at the scene following the collision. Anyone able to help is asked to contact the collision investigation unit on the force number 101, quoting ref CI/277/15-3528.”
