POLICE were called to a suspected arson attack on a barn as the suspected culprits were believed to still be near the scene of the crime.

Firefighters attended the incident in Sloway Lane, West Huntspill, at 3pm today (Saturday).

The 30-metre by 20-metre barn contains straw was well alight when crews from Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater attended along with a water carrier.

Firefighters used a main jet and a compressed air foam jet to protect surrounding buildings.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Police were requested to attend as crews believed this to be deliberate ignition and that the culprits were still nearby."

A telehandler was used to remove bales from the barn.
