CONTROVERSIAL plans to transform an abandoned bank building into flats have been backed as it was decided it would be better to have a development than an empty building.

Burnham and Highbridge town councillors voted unanimously to back the proposals for new flats at the old Nat West bank on Huntspill Road at a planning committee meeting last night (February 21) on the grounds they feel the site would be better used if developed rather than empty.

Cllr Andy Brewer said: "I would prefer to see fewer flats but I feel the development is right here."

Cllr Bill Hancock said: "It is better to see this site developed rather than empty and vandalised."

The decision comes just weeks after town councillors said in principle they supported the application and were pleased the ground floor of the derelict building was going to be developed.

Residents have also spoken out about the proposals saying they feel there are enough flats in Highbridge and that the project would not improve the area.

There were also concerns from residents about parking in the area, said Cllr John Parkes.

"I have previously registered my unhappiness about this scheme.

"There are parking issues there and many residents don't want to see more flats.

"Some residents tell me it would be better used as a museum."

Cllr Andy Brewer replied to his fellow councillor and told him no provision has been provided for a museum and so the only plan they have is for the site to be developed.

The final decision rests with Sedgemoor District Council.
