CHURCHFIELD School is closed amid concerns the school's roof has sustained some damage.

The school on Burnham Road announced on its website that it would be partially closed and only two nursery classes would be running due to the building being damaged by Storm Doris.

A spokesman for Churchfield School said: "Due to the exceptionally high winds yesterday (February 23) experienced in Highbridge and across the country, the decision was taken to close the school to protect the health and safety of the pupils and staff.

"A number of internal ceiling tiles in a classroom and the corridor came loose and fell to the floor."

"The school is in contact with their health and safety advisor, the buildings architect and contractors to ensure the continuous safety of all pupils, staff and visitors.

"The affected areas of the school are closed today (February 24) in order to ensure that the internal ceiling system can be fully inspected and that any immediate repairs can be undertaken.

"The school will ensure that an appropriate action plan is put in place to mitigate the risk of any further damage.

"The school will fully reopen on Monday 27 February."

The news comes after Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge felt the full force of Storm Doris yesterday as 60mph winds hit the coastal towns.

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: "Churchfield Church School, Highbridge will be closed on February 24 owing to high-wind damage at the school.

"This is a precautionary measure and no one has been hurt. The roof has some existing issues which are being fixed – the school decided to close following health and safety advice regarding the storm.

"The school will re-open on Monday February 27."
