LOUISE Harvey of Burnham was delighted after she was chosen as the winner of the first heat of the Miss Brean Sands Competition.
Miss Harvey was the winner with Martine Drummond, of Highbridge, runner up, and Ross Burridge of Edithmead, third.
The local girls were all competing in the the contest, which gave the overall winner a chance to go for the Miss World title.
The finals of the Miss World contest were due to be held in Sun City, South Africa, that November.
Any girl over 17 and under 25, who wanted the opportunity of parading along the catwalk was eligible to enter the Miss Brean Sands contest.
The first event also saw the first winner of the Miss Unity Farm contest.
