TOWN councillors spoke in overwhelming support over plans to build 95 new homes including bungalows in Highbridge.

The reserved matters application for homes at Newton Road went before the town council on Monday night.

The councillors voted to support the application but Sedgemoor District Council will make the final decision.

The councillor’s main reasons for supporting the plan was because it included bungalows, the contribution developers will make to local education and it being in-keeping with the neighbourhood plan – a document that gives more scope to the town regarding planning matters.

Councillor Louise Parkin said at the meeting: “I’m thrilled with the community feel and admire the courage to build bungalows – the amount is phenomenal.

“It gives people ready to retire something to look forward to.”

An agent representing the applicant attended the meeting to dampen concerns the council had at a previous meeting at the beginning of October.

The council stated concerns over a perceived lack of parking spaces and feared the site would become over-developed.

The application was granted outline planning permission in December, 2014, for up to 105 homes.

Agent Toni Hammick said: “We’ve gone with fewer homes than what we had outline permission for so we don’t believe we’ve over-intensified the area.

“From a birds-eye-view, the plans look dense because of the shape of the plot but when you see the street view you see all the green areas and it gives it some context.

“Regulations also say that we’d need 154 parking spaces and we have provided 203.”

The development will be made up of 36 bungalows and 59 two and three bedroom houses.

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton said: “It’s really pleasing to see a quality development in Highbridge.

“It’s in-keeping with the local plan.”
